Information Literacy Instruction

Faculty Librarian Collaboration

With the vast array of growing information each year, it has become vital that students develop comprehensive information literacy skills in order to become lifelong learners.  This is where librarians can aid you in educating Alvernia's students.

Librarians welcome the opportunity to collaborate with faculty to incorporate information literacy skills into their existing courses.  We work with students in exploring library resources, developing search strategies, and thinking critically about how to approach information.  This can take the form of one or more instruction sessions, developing class assignments, or team teaching.

Information literacy sessions are most effective when scheduled to coordinate with students beginning work on an assignment.

What can librarians teach your students?

  • Developing a topic for their paper or project

  • Evaluating information for credibility, including websites and other online sources

  • Using databases effectively - developing search strategies and using specialized functions

  • Keyword searching vs. subject searching

  • Expert Google searching - using both Google Scholar and Google web searches

  • Finding background information through the library's resources

  • The information cycle, including the peer review process

  • RefWorks - our subscription citation management system
